Mikhail Budyko was a scientist who studied the climate. He helped start a new way to study the Earth. He used math to find the heat balance. This is the way the Earth stays at the right temperature. The sun sends heat to our world. Then, the Earth sends heat back out to space. Budyko made models to show how this works.

He studied how ice affects heat. He found that melting ice can change the weather. This is called Arctic amplification. It means the Arctic gets warmer as ice melts. Budyko thought more gas in the air could melt the ice. He said a 50% increase in CO2 could melt all polar ice. CO2 is a gas in our air. He also said that less gas could make the Earth very cold.

Budyko had a big idea to help. He thought we could use tiny particles to cool the planet. People call this idea "Budyko's Blanket." He wanted to find ways to manage solar radiation. This means controlling how much sun heat reaches us. He spent his life trying to understand our changing world.
