Mike Davis was an important American writer and historian.

He lived in Southern California for much of his life. Davis spent his career studying how power and social class work in cities. He was famous for writing books that looked at how big systems affect people. One of his most well-known books was called City of Quartz. He also wrote about history and diseases in books like Late Victorian Holocausts. His very last non-fiction book was about COVID-19 and other plagues.

He wanted to help people understand the world through his research.

His interest in the world began during his childhood in California. He was born in Fontana on March 10, 1946. His father, Dwight, was a member of a meat cutters union. Dwight often took Mike on trips into the Colorado Desert. They looked for things like uranium, old mines, and petrified wood.

During one trip to a café in Ocotillo Wells, Mike saw photos that stayed with him. These photos showed the hard reality of life near the border. These early experiences helped shape his ideas about fairness and power later in life.

As a teenager, Mike's life changed quite a bit. His father had a very bad heart attack when Mike was 16. Because of this, Mike had to leave school to work. He became a delivery truck driver for his uncle's meat company. While working, he met a man named Lee Gregovich. Lee was a cook who encouraged Mike to read books about social ideas. Mike also joined a group called CORE to help with civil rights. This was a very important turning point for him.

In the 1960s, Mike became a very active leader. He moved to New York City in November 1964. There, he worked for a group called the Students for a Democratic Society, or SDS. He helped organize big protests, including a march on Washington. One major event was a sit-in at Chase Manhattan Bank in 1965. This protest was meant to fight against the rules in South Africa. Later, he moved to the Bay Area and then to Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, he worked to stop a new freeway from being built in a Black neighborhood.
