Microsoft PowerPoint is a widely used presentation program designed to help people share information visually.

Originally developed for business organizations, it has become a standard tool for communication across many different fields. The software allows users to create visual aids that support a speaker during a group presentation. This process helps turn abstract ideas into concrete images and text that an audience can easily follow. Today, PowerPoint is a central part of how information is communicated in classrooms, offices, and public forums.

The way PowerPoint functions has evolved alongside display technology. The very first version, released in 1987, was used to produce overhead transparencies. These were clear sheets of plastic that could be projected onto a screen. The second version expanded these capabilities to include color 35 mm slides. By the third version in 1992, the program could produce video output for digital projectors.

This specific technological shift was significant because it allowed digital slideshows to eventually replace physical transparencies and film slides. This transition made presentations more flexible and easier to update.

There have been several distinct stages in the development of the software's features. The early versions focused on physical media like transparencies and slides. Later versions moved toward digital integration, such as the introduction of live video. In 2007, version 12.0 introduced a major change called the "ribbon" user interface. This new interface was a shared design used across the Microsoft Office suite. Additionally, the software moved to a new XML-based file format.

These updates were designed to make the software more powerful and consistent with other applications.

The history of PowerPoint began at a software startup in Silicon Valley called Forethought, Inc. Robert Gaskins joined the company in July 1984 as the vice president of product development. He wrote an initial two-page description of the product in August 1984. He titled this document "Presentation Graphics for Overhead Projection." Gaskins worked with developer Dennis Austin for nearly a year to design the product. They even considered naming the program "Presenter," but lawyers rejected the name because it was already a trademark.

Gaskins eventually chose "PowerPoint" to represent the idea of empowering the presenter.

Microsoft's acquisition of the software changed its trajectory. In early 1987, Microsoft executive Jeff Raikes discovered that Forethought was nearly finished with a presentation product. Microsoft had originally planned to buy a different program called MORE, which was an outlining tool. However, after seeing a demonstration of PowerPoint, Microsoft moved to acquire Forethought instead. In July 1987, Microsoft reached an agreement to buy the company for approximately $14 million.

This was Microsoft's first significant acquisition, and it led to the creation of a new business unit in Silicon Valley.

The impact of PowerPoint on the software market is massive. After its initial release on April 20, 1987, the first production run of 10,000 units sold out completely. Since the late 1990s, it has been estimated that PowerPoint holds a 95 percent worldwide market share of presentation software. This dominance grew as Microsoft integrated the program into the Microsoft Office suite. It was first offered for Macintosh in 1989 and for Windows in 1990. By bundling PowerPoint with other apps like Word and Excel, Microsoft made it a standard part of professional computing.

PowerPoint's development is closely tied to the broader evolution of the Microsoft Office ecosystem. Starting with version 4.0 in 1994, the program was integrated into the Office development process. This meant it shared common components and a converged user interface with other Office apps. This integration was so deep that users could not easily tell the difference between the interfaces of Word or Excel. Today, the software is available on many platforms, including Windows, Macintosh, iOS, Android, and via web access.
