Winning in canoe slalom takes great skill. A paddler must move through a course of water. They must manage the speed and the turns. In the 1996 Olympics, Michal was in sixth place after his first run. He decided to go all out on his second run. He beat the defending champion, Lukáš Pollert, to win gold. In the 2000 Sydney Games, he paddled a perfect course. He moved up to win a silver medal.

Michal's career began when he was very young. He started competing at an international level in 1994. At only 16 years old, he won a World Cup event. This made him the youngest winner of such an event. His father, Jozef, serves as his coach. Michal has been a top competitor for many years. He has won many titles in the C1 individual category.

Michal has a record of amazing wins. He won five Olympic medals between 1996 and 2012. He is the only slalom canoeist to win a medal in five different games. He also has 23 World Championship medals. This includes 15 gold medals. He has won the overall World Cup title five times. This is a record for C1 paddlers. He was even named the Slovak Sportsperson of the Year four times.

His journey shows how much hard work can lead to success. He has stayed at the top of his sport for a long time. Even when he did not win, he kept competing. In 2011, he finished outside the medals for the first time in a big race. This happened at the Čunovo course near Bratislava. However, he still won a gold medal in the team event that year. He continues to be a legend in the whitewater world.
