Jackson utilized a systematic approach to categorize and evaluate beverages. In his 1977 book, *The World Guide to Beer*, he introduced a modern theory of beer style. He organized various beers into local style groups. These groups were based on regional names and customs. He also applied a strict scoring system to malt whisky. In his book, *The Malt Whisky Companion*, he rated whiskies on a scale from 0 to 100. He advised readers to only purchase whiskies that earned a score above 75. This method provided a clear standard for enthusiasts around the world.

His career involved many distinct roles and media formats. He was a regular contributor to major broadsheets like *The Independent* and *The Observer*. He also hosted the influential television series *The Beer Hunter*. This series was broadcast in fifteen different countries. It appeared on Channel 4 in the UK and the Discovery Channel. Through this show, Jackson traveled to various nations to document brewing practices. He filmed specific details, such as workers lining beer barrels with pitch. He also showed iron foundry workers drinking light beer to stay hydrated in hot conditions.

Jackson's personal history shaped his professional expertise. He was born in Wetherby, West Riding of Yorkshire, on March 27, 1942. His family moved to Leeds following World War II. He attended King James's Grammar School in Almondbury. His time as a journalist in Edinburgh was very important. It was there that he first encountered whisky. Later, he moved to London and briefly edited the advertising journal *Campaign*. He achieved major fame in 1977 with his first major book. This publication established him as a leading authority in the brewing world.

His impact is measurable through significant numbers and global reach. Jackson's books have sold over three million copies worldwide. His writing has been translated into 18 different languages. His expertise in Belgian beers earned him a rare distinction. In 1997, he was named an honorary officer of the *Ridderschap van de Roerstok*. This honor is typically reserved for professional brewers. He also designed a specific set of glassware. Working with Rizenhoff Crystal, he created four different glasses. Each glass was designed to suit a specific type of beer.

Jackson received many prestigious awards for his contributions to food and drink writing. He won the André Simon Award and the Glenfiddich Trophy. The latter is a British prize for culinary writers. He also received the James Beard Award in 2006. Within the whisky industry, he earned the titles of "Keeper of the Quaich" and "Master of the Quaich." He was recognized by the North American Guild of Beer Writers as Columnist of the Year. These honors reflect his status as a world-class critic and researcher.

In his later years, Jackson faced significant health challenges. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease more than ten years before his death. He also lived with diabetes. He did not publicly disclose his Parkinson's diagnosis until 2006. This was after symptoms led some people to mistake his condition for inebriation. Michael Jackson died of a heart attack on August 30, 2007. He was 65 years old. He left behind a massive personal library. This collection includes 1,500 books and is held at Oxford Brookes University Library.
