James Cameron Suckling is a highly influential American critic of wine and cigars. A critic is an expert who evaluates the quality of products to help others understand them. Suckling is internationally recognized for his deep experience in these fields. He has held major roles, such as Senior Editor at Wine Spectator. He also served as the European Bureau Chief for that publication. His work helps guide people through the complex world of fine beverages.

Suckling uses a specific method to judge the quality of a wine. While many people start with the nose, or the scent, he focuses more on the mouthfeel. He analyzes the concentration of fruit, tannins, alcohol, and acid. He believes the most revealing element is the persistence of the taste, known as the aftertaste. He views wine as a form of harmony and balance. To him, wine should be an emotional experience rather than a purely scientific one. He famously compares wine to music because both can move a person emotionally.

His professional journey began with studies in political science and journalism. He attended Utah State University and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In 1978, he worked as a crime news gofer for a local newspaper. His interest in wine grew through the influence of his father. In 1981, he joined Wine Spectator when it had only 800 subscribers. By 1982, he moved with the magazine to San Francisco. He eventually moved to Europe to expand the magazine's reach.

Suckling has lived in several major global cities to manage his work. He lived in Paris starting in 1985 to establish a European bureau. During this time, he reviewed wines from Bordeaux, Italy, and Port regions. He later moved to London, where he resided for eleven years. He also spent significant time living in Italy. In 1990, he published a book titled Vintage Port. His career has seen him taste an average of 4,000 wines every year. Half of these annual tastings focused on Italian wines.

Beyond tasting, Suckling uses his platform for charitable and cultural purposes. In 2010, he announced the One Wine One World project. This project was funded by philanthropist Nasser David Khalili. It aimed to bring Jewish, Muslim, and Christian faiths closer together. The project created two wines using grapes from six different regions. These included grapes from California, Mexico, Hungary, Slovenia, Roussillon, and Friuli. These wines were served at a farewell dinner for Pope Benedict XVI in Birmingham.

Suckling has also explored the world of cigars and film. In 2011, he produced a documentary titled Cigars: The Heart and Soul of Cuba. He traveled across Cuba to interview local personalities. He concluded that Cuban tobacco success comes from the industriousness of the people. He also appeared in the documentary Blood Into Wine. This film focused on Maynard James Keenan's efforts to make wine in Arizona. His work often bridges the gap between sensory enjoyment and cultural storytelling.

His contributions to the industry have earned him high honors. In June 2021, France knighted him for his lifetime of work. He received the Ordre National du Merite from the French Consulate in Hong Kong. This award recognizes his dedication to French wines and vineyards. Today, he maintains a global presence through his website, JamesSuckling.com. He also co-founded Divino Tuscany, an event to promote top Tuscan winemakers.
