Michael Benjamin Bay is a prominent American film director and producer. He is widely recognized for creating high-concept, big-budget action films. His signature style includes fast cutting and highly stylistic cinematography. He also makes extensive use of special effects, particularly frequent depictions of explosions. Because of his massive commercial success, he is ranked as the fifth-most successful director in history.

Bay's filmmaking process relies on intense visual energy and large-scale production. He often uses rapid editing techniques to heighten the sense of action. His work frequently incorporates sophisticated special effects to bring complex scenarios to life. He has established several production entities to manage these large projects. These include the Institute and Platinum Dunes, a company known for remaking horror films. Platinum Dunes has produced remakes such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and Friday the 13th (2009).

His career began with commercial work and music videos. After finishing his postgraduate studies, he worked at Propaganda Films. He directed a 90-second World War II-inspired Coca-Cola advertisement. He also directed a "Got Milk?" commercial for the California Milk Processors Board. These successes led to a partnership with producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson. This collaboration resulted in his first feature film, Bad Boys, in 1995. The film cost $19 million to produce and earned $141 million at the box office.

Bay's professional trajectory was shaped by his early education and interests. He grew up in a Jewish household in Los Angeles. As a child, he filmed a toy train accident involving firecrackers using an 8mm camera. At age 15, he interned for George Lucas, filing storyboards for Raiders of the Lost Ark. He later graduated from Wesleyan University in 1986 with majors in English and film. He also attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena for graduate work. His classmates included notable directors like Zack Snyder and Tarsem Singh.

Many of Bay's films have achieved massive global financial success. The 1998 film Armageddon had a budget of $140 million. It went on to gross over $553 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of that year. His 2001 film Pearl Harbor earned four Academy Award nominations. It won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing, marking Bay's only Academy Award win. The Transformers franchise has also seen immense success. The first Transformers film grossed over $709 million by November 2007. The fourth installment, Transformers: Age of Extinction, earned $1.1 billion globally.

Despite his commercial triumphs, Bay has faced critical scrutiny. His 2009 film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen received many negative reviews. Some critics described his talent in very harsh terms. The film also earned three Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture and Worst Director. However, the film remained a commercial hit and was a top seller on Blu-ray. It was the number one best-selling Blu-ray of 2009, surpassed only later by James Cameron's Avatar.

This five-episode series focuses on the serial killer Hadden Clark. In 2017, he received a hand-and-footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre.
