The sago palm grows in wet swamp forests.

This plant is very important to people. It is a main source of sago. Sago is a starch. People get it from the trunk. They crush the pith, which is the soft center. Then they wash the starch out with water.

A single trunk can hold a lot of food. It can feed one person for a year!

People use sago in many ways. They use it for noodles and bread. They also use it for puddings. In New Guinea, people eat sago pancakes with fish.

The palm has many other uses too. People use the leaflets for roofs. These can last for five years. They use dried stems to make walls. These stems are light. This makes them good for rafts.

Each stem flowers only once. This is called being hapaxanthic. When the stem flowers, its life ends. But the plant lives on. It grows new shoots called suckers. People can plant these suckers to grow new trees.
