Meteor Crater

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A giant space rock once hit the Arizona desert.

This made the Meteor Crater. It is a very large hole in the ground. Some people call it Barringer Crater.

About 50,000 years ago, a metal rock hit the Earth. This rock was a meteorite. It was made of nickel and iron. The meteorite hit the ground very fast. The hit was so strong that it made a lot of heat. This heat turned much of the rock into gas. This is called vaporization. Very little of the rock stayed in the crater.

Scientists once thought a volcano made the hole. But they were wrong. A man named Daniel Barringer thought a meteorite made it. He spent many years looking for metal in the crater. He did not find much.

The crater is well-kept today. The desert is very dry. This helps stop the wind and rain from changing its shape. It is one of the best-kept craters on Earth.
