Menengai

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Menengai is a giant shield volcano. It sits in Kenya. It is in the Great Rift Valley. This volcano is very old. It formed about 200,000 years ago. The top has a huge dip. We call this a caldera. This caldera is 12 by 8 km. It formed about 8,000 years ago. It is the largest caldera in Kenya. It is the second largest in Africa. The floor of the caldera has many lava flows. These are paths of melted rock. The floor has many lava boulders. It also has ridges that are hard to reach. There is very little dirt or sand here. The volcano makes the soil nearby very rich. This helps farmers grow food on the hills. People are working there now. They want to use heat from the earth. This will make geothermal power. Geothermal power is heat from the ground. This project is at an advanced stage. Menengai is north of Nakuru. Nakuru is a big city in Kenya.
