He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1932. He grew up in a family of rabbis. His father was a leader of a large group of rabbis in Brooklyn. Kahane studied many things during his life. He studied Jewish scripture and law. He also earned degrees in political science and international relations. He wanted to use his education to lead his people.

Kahane's ideas were very strong and often caused conflict. He believed in using force to protect Jewish people. In 1968, he started a group called the Jewish Defense League in New York. This group wanted to fight against people who were mean to Jews. Kahane even used the slogan "For Every Jew a .22" to encourage people to own guns.

He also believed in a way of life called Kahanism. This idea focused on very strict rules for the land of Israel.

In 1971, Kahane moved to Israel and became a citizen. He started a new political party called Kach.

He wanted Israel to follow Jewish law, which is called halakha. Kahane also wanted to separate Jewish and Arab neighborhoods. He even suggested that non-Jewish people should be slaves or sent away. These ideas were very controversial and led to many arrests. He was arrested dozens of times for his protests and plans.

Kahane had a complicated history with the law. In the United States, he was convicted of acts related to terrorism. This included a plan to bomb an embassy and kidnap a diplomat. In Israel, he was jailed for planning attacks against Palestinians.

In 1984, his party finally won one seat in the Knesset. The Knesset is the place where leaders make laws in Israel. However, he was not allowed to run for office again in 1988.

His life ended suddenly in 1990. He was giving a speech to a group of people from Brooklyn. While he was speaking, he was killed by a man named El Sayyid Nosair.
