Baruch Goldstein was an American and Israeli doctor. He was born Benjamin Carl Goldstein on December 9, 1956. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in an Orthodox Jewish family. He studied at the Yeshiva of Flatbush religious day school. Later, he studied medicine at Yeshiva University. He earned his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

He also belonged to a group called the Jewish Defense League. This was a militant group started by his friend Meir Kahane.

Goldstein moved to Israel in 1983. He served as a doctor in the Israeli military. He worked in both the regular army and the reserve forces. After his military service, he lived in a settlement called Kiryat Arba. This place is located near the city of Hebron in the West Bank. He worked as an emergency doctor there. He often treated people who were hurt in Arab-Israeli violence. Reports said he refused to treat Arab people, even Arab soldiers. He believed Jewish laws did not allow him to treat non-Jews.

On February 25, 1994, Goldstein committed an act of terrorism. He dressed in an Israeli military uniform. He went into a mosque inside the Cave of the Patriarchs. Many Palestinian Muslim worshippers were praying there for the month of Ramadan. Goldstein opened fire on the crowd. He killed 29 people and wounded 125 others.

After the shooting, survivors beat him to death. This event caused many riots and protests in the area.

Leaders in Israel were very shocked by his actions. Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin called it a criminal act of murder. He told the government that Goldstein was not part of the national community. He said that such people were an embarrassment to Judaism. The government also banned the Kach party. Kach was a religious group that the United States and Europe called a terrorist organization. The group was banned less than a month after the attack. Many religious leaders also said his actions were wrong.

Even after his death, Goldstein's legacy caused many arguments. He was buried near Kiryat Arba instead of in Hebron. Some extremist people began to visit his grave as a pilgrimage site. By the year 2000, about 10,000 people had visited the site. People built a shrine and a prayer area near his tomb. In 1999, the Israeli Army removed the shrine. They did this because of a new law against monuments to terrorists. However, people still visit his grave today.
