Goldstein had very extreme ideas. He belonged to a group called Kach. The United States and other countries called Kach a terrorist group. Goldstein also belonged to a group called the Jewish Defense League.

On February 25, 1994, Goldstein did something terrible. He went to a mosque in the Cave of the Patriarchs. He wore an Israeli army uniform. He opened fire on people who were praying. He killed 29 people and hurt 125 others. Survivors then beat him to death.

Many leaders were shocked. The Israeli Prime Minister called it a crime. He said Goldstein was not part of the community. Some people still visit his grave. They see him as a hero. In 1999, the army removed a shrine built at his grave. They did this because of a law against monuments to terrorists.
