We call this insect Meganeura. It lived about 300 million years ago. Its name means "large vein." This refers to the lines on its wings.

Meganeura was a predator. This means it hunted other insects for food. It had large compound eyes. These eyes helped it see very well. It also had large spines on its legs. These spines helped it catch its prey.

One wing could be 25 centimeters long. Its wingspan was about 70 centimeters. Some scientists think it weighed about 2 grams. Others think it was much heavier.

How did it get so big? Some people think the air had more oxygen then. High oxygen might have helped it grow. Other scientists think it grew large because there were no other big flyers to hunt it. We are still learning about these ancient giants.
