Meat Loaf's path to stardom began with his early life in Dallas, Texas. Born Marvin Lee Aday on September 27, 1947, he received his nickname through several stories. His father called him "Meat" because he was a large baby. Later, school classmates called him "Meat Loaf" due to his stature. He grew up in a complex household. His mother was a schoolteacher and gospel singer. His father was a former police officer who struggled with alcohol use.

Before he was a solo star, Meat Loaf worked extensively in theater. He performed in the musical Hair on both Off-Broadway and Broadway stages. He also appeared in the original Los Angeles production of The Rocky Horror Show. During an audition for the Public Theater, he met songwriter Jim Steinman. This meeting was a turning point for his career. They began collaborating on the musical ideas that would define his sound. Meat Loaf also acted in over 50 films and television shows. These roles included Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Robert Paulsen in Fight Club.

Building a music career was not always easy for him. In the early 1970s, he recorded with Motown in Detroit. He released the album Stoney & Meatloaf with singer Shaun "Stoney" Murphy. While he found some success, he struggled to establish a steady career in the United States. However, he became an enormous star in Europe. He was especially popular in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In 1994, he won a Brit Award for having the best-selling album and single.

In 1977, Cleveland International Records finally took a chance on his work. They released Bat Out of Hell, which became a massive global phenomenon. In Australia, the album became the biggest-selling album of all time. In the United Kingdom, the album spent 522 weeks in the Top 200 chart. Meat Loaf also gained national exposure in the U.S. on Saturday Night Live in 1978. Even when he faced physical challenges, like breaking his leg during a tour in Ottawa, he continued to perform from a wheelchair.

His career showed how music and theater can merge into one art form. He used the energy of rock music to tell dramatic stories. This style was so unique that many record companies initially rejected his songs. They felt his music did not fit into any specific, recognized industry style. By staying true to his theatrical vision, he changed the landscape of hard rock. He is currently ranked 96th on VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.
