While Gary Barlow wrote most of the group's material, Williams performed lead vocals on hits like "Could It Be Magic." However, his time with the group ended in July 1995. He left due to conflicts regarding his behavior and musical interests. He wanted to explore hip hop and rap. This differed from the ballads the group usually performed.

After leaving the group, Williams launched a solo career in 1996. He signed with Chrysalis Records following legal battles over his contract. His debut studio album, Life thru a Lens, arrived in 1997. It featured his best-selling single, "Angels." This song helped his album sales skyrocket. The album stayed in the British top ten for forty weeks. It eventually sold over three million copies in Europe.

His second album, I've Been Expecting You, was released in 1998. He worked on this album in Jamaica with songwriter Guy Chambers. It produced his first two solo number one singles, "Millennium" and "She's the One." This album was certified 10× Platinum in the UK. Williams continued to experiment with different musical styles. His third album, Sing When You're Winning, was released in 2000. His fourth album, Swing When You're Winning, focused on his love for Frank Sinatra.

Williams has achieved incredible commercial milestones. He earned a Guinness World Record in 2006. He sold 1.6 million tickets in a single day during his Close Encounters Tour.

His awards reflect his massive impact on the industry. He holds a record 18 Brit Awards. This includes winning Best British Male Artist four times. He also won eight German ECHO Awards and three MTV European Music Awards.

In 2004, he was voted the Greatest Artist of the 1990s. These accolades highlight his long-term success and skill.

In 2010, Williams rejoined Take That for a second period. They released the album Progress, which became a massive hit. It was the fastest-selling album of the century at that time.

Williams maintains a strong connection to his roots in Stoke-on-Trent. He was born there in 1974. In 2014, the city awarded him the freedom of his hometown. They created a tourist trail and named streets in his honor. His life story is also the subject of the 2024 film, Better Man.
