He is recognized as an ambitious and innovative musician who has profoundly influenced generations of music makers. Gabriel rose to prominence as the original frontman for the rock band Genesis. After leaving that group in 1975, he launched a highly successful solo career. His work spans various musical styles and includes significant humanitarian efforts. He has been honored with numerous prestigious awards for both his art and his activism.

Gabriel's musical development began with a strong interest in percussion and vocal performance. At age ten, he purchased a floor tom-tom to practice his drumming. He also took piano lessons from his mother, though he later focused on drums and singing. During his time at Charterhouse School, he joined a trad jazz band called the Milords. He later formed Garden Wall in 1965 with schoolmates, including Tony Banks. This group eventually evolved into the famous progressive rock band Genesis.

As the frontman for Genesis, Gabriel developed a unique and theatrical stage presence. He often used costumes and props to help tell the stories within the music. During the *Foxtrot* tour in 1972, he famously reappeared on stage wearing a fox's head and a red dress. He also utilized various items like a helmet, a shield, bat wings, and a crown of thorns. To manage silence during technical delays, he began reciting improvised stories to the audience. These stories eventually became a key part of the band's performance style.

Gabriel's solo career reached new heights with his fifth studio album, *So*, released in 1986. This album became his best-selling release, earning triple platinum certification in the UK and five times platinum in the US. The single "Sledgehammer" became a massive success, winning a record nine MTV Video Music Awards in 1987. A 2011 report by *Time* noted that "Sledgehammer" was the most played music video in MTV history. He has continued to release music through various cycles, including his 2023 album *I/O*.

Beyond performing, Gabriel has been a pioneer in the music industry's technical evolution. He co-founded OD2, which was one of the first services for downloading music online. He also co-founded the World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) festival in 1982 to celebrate global musical traditions. Through his Real World Records label, he has actively promoted and produced world music. His ability to blend different cultural sounds helped expand the reach of international music.
