He is known for thinking deeply about how individuals relate to the world. Many people see his work as a start for different ways of thinking. These include ideas like existentialism and postmodernism. He also influenced groups like individualist anarchists. His main focus was on the idea of the self. He wanted to understand how a person can be truly free. This makes his work very important for students of philosophy today.

His way of thinking is often called egoism. Stirner believed that every person has their own unique desires. He thought people should follow these desires to live freely. He used a special word, "spooks," to describe certain ideas. These spooks are like ghosts in the mind. He meant that things like laws or religion can act like ghosts. They can control a person without being real things you can touch. To Stirner, a person should decide what is important for themselves.

He was the only child of Albert and Sophia Schmidt. After his father died, his mother remarried and they moved to West Prussia. When he was twenty, he went to the University of Berlin. There, he studied philology and listened to the famous teacher Hegel. He also studied at the University of Erlangen. These studies helped him form his own unique views on the world.

In Berlin, Stirner joined a group called the Young Hegelians.

This group was also known as Die Freien. He spent time with famous thinkers like Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Engels even drew a portrait of Stirner from memory. Stirner worked as a teacher while writing his most famous book. This book is titled "The Unique and Its Property." He also tried to run a dairy business with his second wife, Marie.

Stirner's ideas connect to many different topics in history. He had strong views on property and the state. He believed that property belongs to those who can take and hold it. He was also critical of communism and capitalism. He felt these systems could limit the individual. Even though he lived in relative obscurity, his influence grew later. His thoughts helped shape how people view freedom and authority. Today, many different groups still study his radical ideas.
