Long ago, Samoa was ruled by other countries. First, Germany ruled the islands. A leader named Lauaki Namulau'ulu Mamoe led a group to resist.

The Germans sent him away to another place. Later, New Zealand took control of Samoa.

In 1919, a bad sickness called influenza arrived on a ship.

Many Samoans died from this sickness. This made people very angry at the leaders. They felt the leaders did not care for them.

A group called the Mau began to grow. The name means "resolute" or "firm."

They wanted Samoa to be free. They used peaceful ways to show they were strong. They refused to pay taxes. They also stopped working on big farms.

Many people joined the Mau. This included family heads called matai and many women.

They wore blue clothes with white stripes. One sad day, New Zealand police fired on a group in the streets. This was called Black Saturday. A great leader named Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III died that day.
