Brady opened a studio in New York City in 1844. He took portraits of many famous people. He even photographed many U.S. presidents. One of his photos of Abraham Lincoln was used on a stamp.

During the Civil War, Brady wanted to show the truth of the fighting. He sent many assistants to battle sites. They used mobile darkrooms, which are small rooms for making photos. These men took thousands of pictures. These images showed people what war was really like. Many people think of Brady as the father of photojournalism. This means using photos to tell news stories. He spent a lot of money on his work. Sadly, he did not make much money back. He died with very little. Still, his photos help us learn about history today.
