He is best known for capturing scenes from the American Civil War. People call him the father of photojournalism. This means using pictures to tell news stories about real events. Brady wanted to show the world the truth of what was happening. His work helped people see the reality of war for the first time.

He did not just take pictures of people. He tried to document history as it happened.

Brady learned how to take photos from Samuel Morse. Morse was an inventor who helped bring new photo methods to America. At first, Brady made leather cases for small metal photos called daguerreotypes. Later, he used different methods like ambrotypes and albumen prints. These were paper photos made from glass negatives.

To document the Civil War, Brady used a mobile studio. He sent many assistants to battle sites with traveling darkrooms. A darkroom is a special place used to develop photos. These men took thousands of pictures of soldiers and battlefields. Even though assistants took many shots, Brady directed the whole project.

Brady's journey into photography began in the early 1800s. He was born between 1822 and 1824 in New York.

He was the youngest of three children. At age 16, he moved to Saratoga to study painting. Later, he moved to New York City to study with Morse. In 1844, he opened his own studio on Broadway. By 1849, he had another studio in Washington, D.C. He married Julia Handy in 1850 and lived on Staten Island.

Brady photographed many important leaders in American history. He took portraits of 18 out of 19 U.S. presidents.

This included John Quincy Adams and Abraham Lincoln. He also photographed famous people like the writer Edgar Allan Poe. During the war, he captured images of many generals. This included Union leaders like Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate leaders like Robert E. Lee. He even photographed the British ambassador, Lord Lyons. His work provides a huge visual record of that era.

Many people recognize Brady's work today through famous images. One of his photos of Abraham Lincoln was used on a 90-cent stamp.

His portraits of Lincoln are also seen on the five-dollar bill. Even though he was a great artist, his life was hard. He spent over $100,000 on his Civil War project. The government did not buy his photos like he hoped. This caused him to lose his money. He died in 1896, but his photos still help us understand history.
