He was a self-taught artist. This means he learned everything on his own. He did not go to a special school for photos. Instead, he used his skills in drawing and painting to help him. He learned how to use light to draw eyes to a subject.

White had a very busy life. He worked as a bookkeeper for many years. This job took up most of his time. He had very little money for his art. Sometimes he could only buy two glass plates for photos each week. He had to plan every shot with great care. He even asked friends to pose for him very early in the morning.

He wanted to help others love photography too. He started the Newark Camera Club in Ohio. Later, he moved to New York City. In 1914, he opened the Clarence H. White School of Photography. This was the first school in America to teach photography as an art. He spent much of his later life teaching students how to make beautiful images.
