The fight began because of a land dispute. The United States had recently added Texas to its country.

Mexico did not agree with this move. Both sides argued over where the border should be. The U.S. said the border was the Rio Grande river. Mexico said it was the Nueces River further north.

President James K. Polk wanted more land for the U.S. He wanted to gain territory like California.

After a clash in the disputed area, war was declared. U.S. troops moved into new lands. They took control of parts of California and New Mexico. General Winfield Scott led a large group of soldiers. They moved south and captured Mexico City in 1847.

The war ended with a peace treaty in 1848. Mexico gave up much of its land to the U.S. This land became states like California and Utah. The U.S. paid $15 million for the new land. This war caused many big debates in the United States. People argued about whether slavery should go into the new lands.
