It is also a common name for the building where they meet. Many people call these buildings temples or Masonic halls.

Some people use the term lodge to mean the group itself. This is different from the physical room where they gather.

A lodge is a local chapter that meets as a body.

Most new lodges must get a special permit to start. This permit is called a charter or a warrant. A Grand Lodge is a large group that gives these permits. The Grand Lodge also sets the rules for the local lodges. Some very old lodges in London do not need a warrant. They have special status because they have existed for a long time.

These special lodges are said to exist from time immemorial.

Members work together to learn through three main steps. These steps are called degrees. The first degree is Entered Apprentice. The second degree is Fellowcraft. The third degree is Master Mason.

Some lodges are for study and are called research lodges. The Quatuor Coronati Lodge in London is a famous research lodge. It has members from all over the world who share papers.

Rules for joining can change depending on where you live. In many places, members must be men. They must also believe in a Supreme Being. Most groups require members to be at least 18 or 21 years old. They must also be free people who are not in servitude. Some groups, like Co-Freemasonry, allow both men and women to join.

These rules help keep the group's traditions strong.

Technology has changed how people meet in the 21st century. Some groups now use the internet to hold virtual lodges.

This helps people who live in far away places. It also helps military members who are serving overseas. Many lodges used these online meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most lodges have gone back to meeting in person by 2024. This shows how the group adapts to the modern world.
