It belonged to a king from ancient Egypt. He ruled a long time ago.

The mask is made of bright gold. It is quite heavy. It weighs over 321 troy ounces.

Artists used many colorful stones to make it. They used blue lapis lazuli for the eyebrows. They used white quartz for the eyes. They also used dark obsidian for the pupils.

The king wears a special headcloth called a nemes. It has blue stripes made of glass. On the cloth are a cobra and a vulture. These show he ruled all of Egypt.

A man named Howard Carter found the mask. He found it in a tomb in 1925. The mask had been hidden for over 3,000 years.

There is writing on the back of the mask. These are Egyptian hieroglyphs. They are special symbols used as a way to write. This writing is a spell from the Book of the Dead. It was meant to help the king in the afterlife.

You can see the mask in a museum in Cairo today.
