Mary Kingsley was a famous English explorer and writer. She was born in London in 1862. Her father was a doctor who traveled a lot. Mary loved to read his books about far lands. She liked science books more than stories for girls.

In 1893, Mary began her big trips to West Africa. She visited places like Gabon, Cameroon, and Angola. Most women at that time did not travel alone. Mary often went into wild areas by herself. She lived with local people to learn how to survive. They helped her as guides and workers.

Mary was a very good observer. She collected fish for the British Museum. She even found three new kinds of fish! She also studied how people lived and their religions. She wrote two famous books about her travels. These books helped people in Europe understand Africa better.

Mary had many strong ideas. She thought it was wrong to change local cultures too fast. She spoke to many crowds about her life. Even when things were hard, she kept exploring.
