Spencer moved to Australia to do his work. He traveled to Central Australia. There, he studied Aboriginal peoples. He worked with a man named Frank Gillen. They wrote books about the people they met. Spencer had some views that were not kind. He thought Aboriginal people were at a lower level than Europeans. This caused many arguments with other scientists. One man, Carl Strehlow, disagreed with Spencer. Strehlow believed the people were creative and had a bright future.
