These books are stories that keep readers excited and curious about what happens next. She wrote 51 books during her career. Every single one of them was a bestseller in the United States and Europe. Her books stayed in print for a very long time. Her first big suspense book was called "Where Are the Children?" It was so popular that it went through 75 printings. In the United States alone, she sold more than 100 million copies of her books.

Mary loved to create stories from a very young age. She wrote her first poem when she was only seven years old. She also wrote short plays for her friends to act out. She even kept a journal starting at age seven. Later, she attended the Villa Maria Academy. Her teachers there encouraged her to keep writing. Even though she sometimes wrote instead of studying, she kept practicing her craft. This early passion helped her become a master of the mystery genre.

Before she was a full-time writer, Mary had many different jobs. She worked as a secretary for an advertising company. She also worked as a model for company brochures. One of her fellow models was a woman named Grace Kelly. Mary also worked as a flight attendant for Pan American Airlines. This job allowed her to travel to Europe, Africa, and Asia. She even flew on one of the last flights into Czechoslovakia before the Iron Curtain fell.

Writing became her main way to support her family. After her husband Warren died in 1964, she worked for many years writing four-minute radio scripts. Her agent then encouraged her to try writing full novels. She joined a writing workshop at NYU to get better. In this group, writers shared their work and gave helpful tips. One professor taught them to find ideas by asking "What if?" or "Why?" Mary used these questions to build her famous plots.

Writing is a talent that runs in her family. Her daughter, Carol Higgins Clark, is also a writer. Her former daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Clark, is a writer too. Mary's life shows how hard work and practice can lead to great success. She turned her many life experiences into wonderful stories for millions of people. Her legacy lives on through the many readers who enjoy her suspenseful books.
