He spent his life studying the past. He was a philologist. This means he studied how words and languages work. He looked at many old languages. These included Greek, Latin, and Hebrew. He also studied Akkadian, Phoenician, Hittite, and Ugaritic.

Martin found that ancient Greek stories were not alone. He showed how Greek poetry and myth had links to the Near East. This was a big idea in his work. He wrote a famous book called The East Face of Helicon. He also studied the Iliad and the Odyssey. These are very old and famous stories. He made new versions of these texts for people to read.

He was very good at his work. He won the Balzan Prize in 2000. He also won the Kenyon Medal in 2002. Queen Elizabeth II gave him a special honor. It is called the Order of Merit. Martin died in 2015 at age 77. He left behind many books and many new ideas. He helped us see how people shared ideas long ago.
