Martial law is a way to run a country using military power. Usually, a civilian government and its legal systems lead a nation. Under martial law, the military takes over these roles instead. This means the usual laws and rights of citizens may be paused. The military might set a curfew to tell people when to stay home.

People who break these new rules might face military courts. This is often called a court-martial. This system can last for a set time or stay in place indefinitely.

Governments use martial law for many different reasons. It often happens during times of war or big emergencies. Some leaders use it during natural disasters or when there is civil unrest. It can also happen during a coup d'état, which is when the military takes power.

Sometimes, it is used to stop protests or political groups. In other cases, it helps manage an area after a war ends. For example, the military helped rebuild Germany and Japan after World War II. It was also used during the Reconstruction Era in the United States.

People have used martial law for a very long time. In 1628, a man named Sir Matthew Hale wrote about it in England. He said it felt more like something allowed than a real law. Many countries do not have a specific law that says they can use it. Instead, they use a rule called the doctrine of necessity. This idea says the military must take over to save the country. This was used in places like Pakistan to justify military rule.

History shows many different ways martial law has worked. In Taiwan, martial law lasted for thirty-eight years until 1987. In Australia, Lieutenant-Governor George Arthur declared it in Tasmania in 1828. This lasted for over three years during the Black War. In Egypt, the military took control in 2011 during an uprising. The military then became the main power in the country. This included the power to dissolve the parliament and suspend the constitution. In Canada, the War Measures Act was used during both World Wars.

Martial law changes how a society functions day to day. It moves the power from judges and leaders to soldiers. This can happen in many parts of the world today. For instance, Armenia and Azerbaijan both declared it during a war in 2020. In Bahrain, the King used it in 2011 to handle protests. These events show how quickly rules can change during a crisis. Understanding martial law helps us see how nations handle very hard times. It is a tool that changes the basic way people live together.
