A military dictatorship is a type of government where the armed forces hold supreme power. In these systems, the leaders are often the commander-in-chief or members of a military junta. A junta is a group of leaders who rule a country together.

These governments often form during times of great unrest or instability. Military leaders might claim they are taking control to restore order. They may also say they want to fight corruption. However, the personal reasons of the officers can vary quite a bit.

Most military dictatorships begin with a coup d'état. This is when the military overthrows the existing government. Coups often happen if the military feels its interests are at risk. For example, they might face cuts to their funding. They might also dislike civilian leaders interfering in their affairs.

Sometimes, an informal group called an insurgency tries to seize power. Insurgencies are different because they lack formal military structure. This lack of organization can lead to fighting within the group. In other cases, a civilian leader might use the military to gain more power.

These types of rule have a long history in different parts of the world. Modern military dictatorships began to develop in Latin America during the 19th century. They spread into Europe during the early 20th century.

During the Cold War, these regimes saw a large resurgence. Many new military dictatorships were established in Africa, Asia, and Latin America in the 1960s.

Some scholars believe the number of these governments has gone down since the Cold War ended.

Military rule is often less stable than other types of government. On average, a military dictatorship lasts only five years. The average military dictator stays in power for just three years.

They often struggle to get support from the regular people. This is because they limit political participation. The biggest threat to a dictator often comes from their own officers. If the military becomes divided, the government can fall apart quickly.

Many military dictatorships eventually end and return to civilian rule. This process is called democratization. Some leaders choose to step down to protect the military as an institution. They might do this if the economy improves or if they face pressure from other countries.

Foreign countries can use diplomatic or economic pressure to help end these regimes. Sometimes, a foreign military invasion is used to remove a leader. After the military leaves, the new civilian government must learn to control the armed forces. This helps ensure the country stays stable and democratic.
