You might know them as kangaroos or koalas. They also include opossums and wombats. Most marsupials live in Australia or the Americas.

One big thing makes them special. This is how they have babies. Most female marsupials have a pouch. This pouch is called a marsupium.

The babies are born very small. They are often blind and have no fur. The tiny babies must crawl through the mother's fur. They look for a teat to drink milk. A teat is a part that gives milk to the baby. The baby stays in the pouch for many weeks. It stays there to stay safe and warm.

Marsupials have many different sizes. The tiny marsupial mouse is very small. The red kangaroo is the largest living one. Long ago, an extinct animal called Diprotodon was much bigger. It weighed many tons! Marsupials have many teeth to help them eat. Some have 40 teeth and some have 50.
