You might know them as kangaroos or koalas. They also include opossums and wombats. Most marsupials live in Australia or the Americas.

One big thing makes them special. This is how they have babies. Most female marsupials have a pouch. This pouch is called a marsupium. The babies are born very small. They are often blind and have no fur. The tiny babies must crawl through the mother's fur. They look for a teat to drink milk. A teat is a part that gives milk to the baby. The baby stays in the pouch for many weeks. It stays there to stay safe and warm.

They belong to a group called Marsupialia. You might know many of them already. They include kangaroos, koalas, and wombats. They also include opossums and Tasmanian devils. These animals live in different parts of the world. Most live in Australasia, like Australia and New Guinea. Others live in the Americas. Some live in South America. Only one species, the Virginia opossum, lives in North America. This group is very diverse. They can be found in many different habitats.

How these animals have babies is very unique. Most female marsupials have a pouch on their belly. This pouch is called a marsupium. It comes from a Greek word meaning pouch. The babies are born in a very undeveloped state. They are often blind and have no fur. These tiny babies must crawl through the mother's fur. They look for a teat to drink milk. The baby stays in the pouch for many weeks. It stays there for warmth and protection.

After a while, the young leave for short trips. They always return to the pouch to sleep.

Long ago, a huge animal called Diprotodon lived. It was much larger than any marsupial alive today. Marsupials also have interesting teeth. Many have between 40 and 50 teeth. This is often more than many other mammals. Some, like the opossum, keep a very old tooth count. Others have fewer teeth to help them eat.

Marsupials share some traits with other mammals. They have hair and bones. They also have mammary glands to make milk. However, their bodies have some special differences. Most marsupials do not have a corpus callosum. This is a part that connects the two sides of the brain. They also have unique bones in their hips called epipubic bones. These bones project forward from the pelvis. Most marsupials also have a lower body temperature. This is usually lower than similar-sized placental mammals. Because of this, marsupials have a very short gestation period. This period typically lasts between 12 and 33 days. Some species, like the stripe-faced dunnart, have gestations as short as 10 days. Others, like the long-nosed potoroo, can have gestations lasting up to 38 days. After this brief time, the newborn, or joey, is born in a fetal state. The joey is often blind and lacks fur. It must immediately crawl through the mother's fur to find a nursing teat. This journey is often aided by the mother licking her fur to create a scent trail. Once attached to a teat, the joey remains for several weeks to receive nutrients and immunological defense.

Anatomy sets marsupials apart from other mammals in several specific ways. Most female marsupials possess two uteri and two vaginas. A birth canal, known as the median vagina, forms between them to allow for birth. Many species also have a permanent pouch, though some, like the shrew opossum, only develop skin folds during gestation. In males, the reproductive anatomy is also unique. Most males, except for macropods and marsupial moles, have a bifurcated penis. This means the penis is split into two columns to correspond with the female's two vaginas. Additionally, marsupials lack a corpus callosum, which is the structure that connects the two hemispheres of the brain. They also possess epipubic bones that project forward from the pelvis. These bones are thought to have originally helped with the movement of the hind limbs.
