Warhol used a special way to make this print. He used a method called silk-screening. He took a single photo of the actress to start. This photo was a publicity shot from the 1953 film Niagara. The artwork contains 50 separate images of her face. The left side has 25 images painted in bright colors. The right side has 25 images in black and white. On the right, the images look blurry and distorted.

Warhol finished this work in 1962. He completed it just weeks after Marilyn Monroe died in August 1962. Some people believe the two sides show a deep meaning. They think the colorful side represents her life. They think the fading black and white side represents her death. This connection makes the art feel very powerful. It is a way to remember a person through art.

This artwork is highly respected by many experts. In 2004, a survey named it the third most influential modern art piece. This survey included 500 artists and critics. Another expert ranked it ninth among works from the last 1,000 years.

Warhol was known for a habit called appropriation. This means he used images that he did not own. He often used photos from movies or famous brands. He used the Marilyn photo without permission from the studio. This caused a legal dispute with the owners. Eventually, he reached a settlement regarding the use of the photo.
