Marie Marvingt was a brave woman from France. She was a world-class athlete. She won prizes in many sports. These included swimming, cycling, and skiing. She even won a gold medal for all sports.

Marie loved to fly. She was a great balloon pilot. She was the first woman to fly a balloon across the North Sea. Later, she learned to fly planes. She was the first woman to fly the difficult Antoinette plane. She even held four different pilot licenses. This included licenses for balloons, planes, hydroplanes, and helicopters.

Marie wanted to help people during wars. She thought planes could work as air ambulances. An air ambulance is a plane used to carry sick people. She worked to make this a reality. In 1935, she became the first certified flight nurse. This means she was trained to help patients while flying.
