She was born in Geneva, Switzerland. As a teen, she wrote short stories. She used a male name to write them. Isabelle loved to learn about North Africa. She read many books about the area. She even wrote letters to a soldier there. She wanted to know all about the Sahara.

In 1897, Isabelle moved to Algeria. She wanted to live like the local people. She wore a burnous, which is a long cloak. She also wore a turban on her head. This helped her move freely as a woman. Isabelle also became a Muslim. She even took the name Si Mahmoud Saadi. She spoke Arabic very well.

Some people in Algeria did not like her. They thought she was a spy. This made her life hard. She even survived an attempt on her life. Later, she married an Algerian soldier named Slimane Ehnni. Isabelle wrote many more stories and books. Sadly, she died in 1904. A sudden flash flood hit the town of Aïn Séfra. Many people still honor her work today. Some streets are even named after her.
