She was born in 1931 in a small village. Her father wanted her to study. She grew up in a world where boys were often valued more than girls. Nawal did not like this. She wanted things to be fair for everyone.

Nawal went to medical school at Cairo University. She became a doctor in 1955. As a doctor, she saw that many women faced hard lives. She wrote books to talk about these problems. One famous book was called "Woman and Sex."

Because of her writing, some people were angry. She lost her job at the Ministry of Health. In 1981, she was sent to prison. Even in jail, she did not stop. She did not have pens or paper. She used an eyebrow pencil and toilet paper to write her thoughts.

While in prison, she started a group for women. It was called the Arab Women's Solidarity Association. This group helped women stand together. Nawal won many prizes for her brave work. She helped people all over the world hear her ideas.
