Monique Wittig was a famous writer from France.

She was also a philosopher. This means she spent her life thinking about big ideas. She wrote many books and essays about how people live.

Wittig helped start new groups for women. She was a founder of the Women's Liberation Movement. She also helped start the first lesbian group in Paris.

In 1969, she wrote a book called Les Guérillères. This book is about women warriors. These warriors create their own country. Many people think this book helped start modern French feminism.

Wittig had many big ideas about gender. She thought the way we use words is very important. She believed that being a man or a woman is part of a social system. She wanted to change this system to make things more fair.

She lived in France and the United States. She taught at many colleges. These included the University of California, Berkeley.

Her work still helps thinkers study identity today. She died in 2003.
