Feminist separatism is a way for women to seek equality. Some women believe they can do this by living apart from men. This idea is often linked to lesbian feminism.

A group called Cell 16 helped start this idea in 1968. They told women to stay away from men who did not work for women's freedom. This was a way to focus on women's needs.

Many lesbians used separatism as a strategy. Some did it for a short time to reach a goal. Others lived this way for their whole lives. They wanted to build a strong community. This community was based on shared values. It helped women feel more certain about who they were.

In the United States, women like Del Martin spoke out. She felt some groups did not do enough for women. In 1971, a group called The Furies formed a commune. It was a place just for lesbians.

This movement happened in many places. It grew in France and in Latin America. In places like Mexico and Chile, women worked together. They faced hard times, but they stayed close to reach shared goals.
