He played 19 seasons for the New York Yankees from 1995 to 2013. Most of his career was spent as a closer. A closer is a relief pitcher who enters a game late to secure a win. Rivera earned the nicknames "Mo" and "Sandman." Fans recognized his arrival by his entrance song, "Enter Sandman."

He was a vital part of the Yankees dynasty. This period saw the team win four championships in five years. Rivera himself won five World Series titles.

Rivera’s success relied on a specific, highly effective pitch.

He primarily threw a cut fastball, often called a cutter. This pitch traveled at speeds in the mid-90s miles per hour. As it approached the batter, the ball moved with sharp, sudden motion. This movement frequently caused hitters to break their bats.

Beyond velocity, Rivera was known for precise control and a smooth pitching motion. He maintained remarkable composure on the field during high-pressure moments. These technical skills made him incredibly difficult for opponents to hit.

His journey began in the modest fishing village of Puerto Caimito, Panama.

Born in Panama City on November 29, 1969, he grew up in a poor environment. His father, Mariano Sr., was a fishing boat captain. As a child, Rivera played soccer and baseball on the beach during low tide. He used makeshift equipment like tree branches for bats and shredded fishing nets for balls. He eventually worked on commercial boats to save money. He originally hoped to open an automobile repair shop.

Rivera's path to professional baseball was unexpected.

At age 18, he played for the amateur Panamá Oeste Vaqueros. He was originally a utility player with no formal pitching training. During a playoff game, he replaced a struggling pitcher and performed well. This performance led scouts to contact the New York Yankees. The Yankees signed him on February 17, 1990. At the time, he was considered a "fringe prospect" with limited experience.

Rivera faced several challenges during his rise through the minor leagues.

After moving to the United States, he felt homesick and lonely. In 1992, he suffered damage to his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. He underwent surgery to repair the frayed ligament. During his recovery, he practiced with legendary Yankees pitchers like Whitey Ford. He eventually returned to the field, steadily climbing through the levels of the minor leagues. By 1995, he reached the major leagues as a starting pitcher.

Rivera's statistical achievements are unmatched in the sport.

He holds the MLB career record for saves with 652. He also holds the record for most games finished at 952. Rivera was incredibly consistent, saving at least 25 games in 15 consecutive seasons. He posted an earned run average (ERA) under 2.00 in 11 different seasons. His career 2.21 ERA was the lowest in the live-ball era among qualified pitchers. He was a thirteen-time All-Star and won the 1999 World Series MVP Award.

His legacy is honored through many prestigious awards and traditions.

In 2019, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was the first player ever elected unanimously by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. The Yankees retired his uniform number, 42, in 2013. In 2014, MLB named its American League Reliever of the Year Award in his honor. Rivera also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019. He continues to give back through the Mariano Rivera Foundation, which supports various charitable causes.
