Derek Jeter is a legendary American professional baseball player and businessman.

He spent his entire 20-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career playing for the New York Yankees. Known by the nickname "the Captain," Jeter was a shortstop, a defensive position in the middle of the infield. He was a central figure in the Yankees' dynasty during the late 1990s and early 2000s. His leadership and consistent skill helped the team win five World Series championships. Jeter is now a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, an honor reserved for the greatest players in history.

Jeter's path to the Major Leagues involved several developmental stages in the Minor League Baseball system.

In 1992, he began with the Gulf Coast Yankees in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. He initially struggled, batting only .202 in his first 47 games. He was later promoted to the Greensboro Hornets in the Class A South Atlantic League (SAL). While he committed 56 errors in 1993, a SAL record, he was still named the league's Best Defensive Shortstop. By 1994, he moved through Class A-Advanced, Class AA, and Class AAA levels. That year, he combined to hit .344 and stole 50 bases across those different levels.

His professional career officially began in the Major Leagues on May 29, 1995.

After injuries to other players, the Yankees called him up to the big leagues. He wore uniform number 2, a number the Yankees later retired in his honor in 2017. In 1996, he became the team's starting shortstop and won the Rookie of the Year Award. This season also helped lead the Yankees to a World Series victory over the Atlanta Braves. As his career progressed, Jeter became a consistent leader, serving as the Yankees' team captain from 2003 until his retirement in 2014.

Jeter's upbringing heavily influenced his disciplined approach to the game.
