She lived from 1647 to 1717 and was born into a family of engravers. Her father, Matthäus Merian, ran a publishing house in Germany. Her stepfather, Jacob Marrel, was a painter who taught her how to draw.

Even as a young girl, Maria was curious about the natural world. At age 13, she began raising silkworms to watch them grow. This early interest led her to become a pioneer in the study of insects.

Maria studied a process called metamorphosis. This is the way an insect changes its body as it grows.

She watched insects move through stages from an egg to a larva. Next, they became a pupa, which is a resting stage. Finally, they emerged as adults, like butterflies. Before her work, many people believed in spontaneous generation. They thought insects were simply born from mud.

Maria's careful observations proved that insects have predictable life cycles. She showed that they depend on specific plants to live.

Her career involved many important books and travels. In 1679, she published the first of two books about caterpillars. Each book had 50 plates that she engraved and etched herself.

Later, in 1699, she made a daring trip to Suriname in South America. She traveled there with her daughter, Dorothea Maria. To pay for the trip, Maria sold 255 of her own paintings.

She spent two years in the tropical region sketching new species. This journey helped her discover many beautiful animals from the East and West Indies.

In Suriname, Maria worked hard to record local nature. She drew many different insects and the plants they used.

She even illustrated a pineapple in her work. In 1705, she published her famous book, *Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium*. This book showed the incredible life cycles of tropical insects.

While there, she also noted the names of local plants. She was not paid by a company to do this research. Instead, she did it because she wanted to understand how insects transform.

Maria's work connects art with the science of biology. She used watercolors and gouache to paint on vellum.

This allowed her to show the bright colors of nature. Her drawings were so good they were used as patterns for embroidery. Today, famous scientists like David Attenborough recognize her great work. She helped change how we see the tiny creatures in our gardens. Her life shows how looking closely at the world can lead to big discoveries.
