Later, in 1699, she made a daring trip to Suriname in South America. She traveled there with her daughter, Dorothea Maria. To pay for the trip, Maria sold 255 of her own paintings.

Her training began early in her life through her family connections. Her father, Matthäus Merian the Elder, was an engraver and publisher. After her father died, her mother married Jacob Marrel, a still life painter. Marrel encouraged her artistic talents. She was also trained by Abraham Mignon, a pupil of Marrel. By age 13, Merian was already painting insects and plants from specimens she captured. She even raised silkworms at that young age to study them. These early experiences built the foundation for her future scientific career.

Merian’s career involved significant publications and community involvement. In 1675, she published her first book of natural illustrations. In 1679, she released the first volume of a two-volume series on caterpillars. The second volume followed in 1683. Each of these volumes contained 50 plates that she created using engraving and etching.

During her time in Nuremberg, she also gave drawing lessons to wealthy families. This work provided financial support and gave her access to elite gardens. These gardens allowed her to continue collecting and documenting new insect species.

One of Merian's most daring achievements was her journey to Suriname. In 1699, she received permission from the city of Amsterdam to travel to South America.

She was not employed by any commercial corporation during her travels. Instead, she worked independently to answer questions about insect reproduction. In 1701, she had to return to the Dutch Republic due to an illness, possibly malaria. In 1705, she published her major work, *Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium*. This book featured her observations of the incredible transformations occurring in the tropics.

Merian’s work successfully bridged the gap between fine art and biological science. She used vellum, a prepared animal skin, as her drawing surface. Because women were not allowed to join painting guilds, she used watercolors and gouache.
