Maria Bakunin was a famous scientist who studied two big fields. She was a chemist and a geologist. Chemistry is the study of what things are made of. Geology is the study of the Earth and its rocks.

She was a very important person in the world of science. Her work helped people understand molecules and the ground beneath them. She lived a long and busy life full of discovery.

Maria's work in chemistry focused on how molecules are shaped. This field is called stereochemistry.

She studied how different shapes change how things work. In 1900, she found a new way to use a substance called phosphorus pentoxide. This helped scientists make new things like ethers and anhydrides. She also worked on making medicines for people to use.

Her ideas were published in many important science books.

Maria grew up in a place called Siberia. She was born in the city of Krasnoyarsk on February 2, 1873.

Her father was a man named Mikhail Bakunin. After her father died, Maria and her family moved to Naples, Italy. She went to the University of Naples to learn science. By 1895, she had already finished her degree. She even worked at the Chemistry Institute by the year 1890.

As a geologist, Maria looked closely at the Earth. In 1906, she studied the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

In 1909, she made a special map of the Italian Peninsula. This map showed where to find ichthyol in the mountains of Salerno. Ichthyol is a special oil found in certain rocks. She worked as a consultant for many years to help people use these mines. She even became the president of a big chemistry group in 1921.

Maria lived through a very difficult time during World War II. Her house was burned down by the Nazis.

She had to move into a hall at the University of Naples. She stayed there and taught chemistry for many years. After the war ended, she helped rebuild important places like the Accademia Pontaniana. She helped fix a library and served as president of the academy. Maria died in 1960 at the age of 87.
