He was born in Venice around the year 1254. His father, Niccolò, and his uncle, Maffeo, were also traders. They traveled far away to meet the great Mongol ruler, Kublai Khan. In 1269, they finally returned home to Venice to meet young Marco. At age seventeen, Marco joined them on a massive journey to Asia.

They traveled along the Silk Road to reach a place called Cathay. This long trip changed the way people in Europe saw the world.

The journey was a very long and difficult task. The Polos sailed to Acre and then rode camels to the port of Hormuz. They carried important letters from the Pope to the Great Khan.

When they reached the palace in Shangdu, Marco was twenty-one years old. Kublai Khan was very impressed by Marco's intelligence and his humble ways. The ruler gave Marco many important jobs as a foreign emissary. Marco spent seventeen years traveling through China and Southeast Asia. He visited places like Myanmar, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.

While living in the Mongol Empire, Marco saw many new things. He saw the great wealth of the Yuan dynasty in China.

He was one of the first Europeans to learn about paper money. He also saw gunpowder, porcelain, and many exotic plants and animals. Because he spoke so much about the Khan's huge wealth, people gave him a nickname. They called him "Il Milione," which means "The Million." This name stuck with him for the rest of his life.

After many years, the Polos finally left Asia around 1291. They helped a Mongol princess named Kököchin travel to Persia.
