Marcel Duchamp was a very important French American artist.

He was also a chess player and an inventor. He helped start a new way of thinking about art. People call this the avant-garde style. He is often linked to the start of Conceptual art. This means the idea is more important than the object. He even showed a toilet as a piece of art.

This changed what people thought art could be.

In his early years, Duchamp lived in France. He was born on July 28, 1887. He grew up in a family of artists. His brothers Jacques Villon and Raymond Duchamp-Villon were also famous.

He studied at the Académie Julian from 1904 to 1905. He also served in the 39th Infantry Regiment in 1905. During this time, he learned about printing and type. These skills helped him make art later. He even studied math and physics to understand the world.

One of his most famous early works was a painting.

It was called Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2. He finished it in 1912. The painting shows a person moving down steps. It uses many lines to show motion. It looks a bit like a moving film. Many people were shocked by it at the Armory Show. This big show happened in New York City in 1913. It brought many new styles from Paris to America.

He also liked to use science in his work.

He made a piece called 3 Standard Stoppages. He dropped three pieces of thread from one meter high. The threads landed in random shapes on blue-black canvas. He then turned these shapes into wood slats. He also liked to watch a bicycle wheel spin. He kept a wheel on a stool in his studio.

He enjoyed watching it just like a fire.

Duchamp spent his last 25 years living in New York City. He worked on a very long project called The Large Glass.

This piece took more than ten years to finish. He also thought about how spectators see art. He believed the person watching the art was very important. His ideas helped many other artists later on. People like Andy Warhol used his ideas for their own art. Duchamp died on October 2, 1968. He left behind a world of new ideas.
