Mandarava was a very important figure in the history of Vajrayana Buddhism.

Many people see her as a female guru-deity or a highly realized spiritual teacher. She was a princess born in Zahor in northern India. Her father was King Vihardhara and her mother was Queen Mohauki. Even as a young girl, she showed a strong interest in the Dharma. The Dharma refers to the teachings of the Buddha. She was also very highly educated at a young age. This was quite rare for women during that time in history.

Mandarava chose a spiritual life instead of getting married. This was a hard choice because many kings wanted to marry her. Her father was very angry about her decision. He even put her in a palace dungeon to stop her. While she was in prison, she did not stop teaching others. She led at least 800 women to follow the path of the Dharma. This included a group of 300 noble women and another group of 500 women. These women began serious meditation and even built a temple to practice together.

Her life changed when she met the great teacher Padmasambhava. He was a founder-figure of Tibetan Buddhism. One story says her father tried to harm them with fire. Instead of a tragedy, the fire turned into Lake Rewalsar in India. The lake has a lotus flower that kept them safe.

At age 16, Mandarava became one of Padmasambhava's spiritual consorts. They traveled to the Maratika Cave in Nepal to practice together. This cave is located about 185 kilometers southwest of Mount Everest. There, they practiced teachings about long life and mastery.

Many people believe Mandarava is still present in the world today. They believe she returns through different incarnations to inspire others. For example, the teacher Niguma is considered to be an incarnation of Mandarava.

In the United States, Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo is also recognized as an emanation of her. Artists often show her in a special way called iconography. She is often shown with white skin and regal decorations. She might hold a mirror or a long-life vase in her hands. Sometimes she is even shown performing an energetic dance.

Mandarava's influence can still be seen in many places today. The city of Mandi in India is said to be named after her. Many people go on special journeys to visit shrines in her honor. Her teachings are still used by many different Buddhist groups. Some of these groups focus on sacred medicines or long life practices. There is even a connection to a tree called the coral tree. The Lotus Sutra also mentions Mandarava blossoms raining down on a great assembly.
