Some people call them sea cows because they are peaceful and slow.

There are three different species of manatee living today. These include the Amazonian manatee, the West Indian manatee, and the West African manatee.

They live in places like the Caribbean Sea and the Amazon basin. These animals are very important to the watery worlds they inhabit.

Eating is a big part of a manatee's day. They spend up to seven hours grazing on plants.

They eat over 60 different kinds of plants. To do this, they use a special upper lip. This lip is prehensile, which means it can grasp and move things. They also use their flippers to walk along the bottom. This helps them scoop up plants and roots from the ground.

Manatees have a very clever way of keeping their teeth. Eating gritty plants can wear their teeth down quickly. To fix this, they grow new teeth throughout their lives. New teeth grow at the back of the mouth. The older teeth move forward like a conveyor belt. This is a process very similar to how elephants grow teeth.

Scientists have studied manatees for a long time. We know they evolved from four-legged land mammals. This happened more than 60 million years ago. Their closest living relatives are elephants and hyraxes.

One interesting fact is that manatees only have six neck bones. Most other mammals have seven neck bones. This is a very rare trait in the animal kingdom.

Manatees rely on warm water to stay healthy. They cannot survive if the water drops below 15 °C.

In the winter, they often swim to warm rivers in Florida. Some manatees even gather near warm water from power plants. They are also very smart animals with good memories. They can learn tasks much like dolphins do.
