The fourth living species in this order is the dugong, which lives in the Eastern Hemisphere. Manatees are distinguished from dugongs by their tails. While a dugong has a fluked tail like a whale, a manatee has a paddle-shaped tail.

Manatees have a unique way of eating and digesting food. They use a large, flexible, prehensile upper lip to gather vegetation.

Unfortunately, manatees face many dangers from human activity. Habitat destruction is a major cause of death. Because they are slow-moving and curious, they often collide with boats. Some manatees have been found with over 50 scars from propeller blades.
