It looks like the Japanese spider crab. But they belong to different crab families.

Baby crabs start very small. They are just over 1mm long. They float in the water at first. Soon, they change into young crabs. These young crabs live on the sea floor.

They spend two years growing and molting. Molting is when a crab sheds its old shell to grow a new one. Young crabs hide in rocks and kelp forests.

Adult crabs eat seaweed and small sea animals.

They also eat mollusks, which are animals like snails or clams. Some crabs travel long distances. In the autumn, they may swim over 160 km.

People catch these crabs for food. Over 5,000 tonnes are caught each year. Most come from the coast of France. Now, these crabs are endangered. This means it is harder to find them in the sea. Some countries have rules to help them. For example, Spain does not allow people to keep females with eggs.
